Majoring in Italian at Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus provides undergraduate students with many opportunities. In today’s open world, international skills are becoming more important with each passing day. A language degree can help students preparing for the new international challenge and open the door to many professional graduate schools, including Law schools and schools of International Affairs or Diplomacy, as well as to careers in education, international business, and public relations.
In the rigorous and friendly setting of the Italian Department, students will acquire a solid training in a humanistic discipline, fluency in the language, and a strong background in Italian literature and culture.
The major consists of 12 courses. 560:250 or 560:251 are required; the remaining courses must be at the 300-level or higher. Up to three courses may be taught in English; these must be taken at the 300-level or higher. The student's program must be approved by the departmental adviser.
Upon completion of all required departmental and college coursework, students will be conferred the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Italian. |

Combining a bachelor’s degree with an Italian minor can grant access to specialized jobs. A minor in Italian can be one way to distinguish oneself by diversifying a bachelor’s degree with a language specialization.
The minor in Italian requires 6 courses, beginning with 560:250. The remaining courses must be taken at the 300-level or higher. One course may be taken in English. The student's program must be approved by the department director.
Upon completing the minor in Italian, students should have attained fluency in the language. The minor degree will be bestowed in conjunction with an approved major upon graduation. |

The Italian Club sponsors lectures and trips to the theater and opera, and other cultural programs.
The Institute for Italian and Italian American Heritage organizes a broad range of events demonstrating the vibrant presence of Italian cultural traditions today as well as the creativity of the Italian diaspora in the United States and in the world.
The Summer Program in Italy is a six-week program held in the lively Renaissance city of Urbino.
The Study Abroad Program in Italy offers students a full immersion experience with the opportunity to attend a semester or a year-long program in Florence.
