For Undergraduate Students, Major and Minor Candidates

Undergraduates who wish to specialize in Italian will acquire fluency in the language as well as a strong background in Italian literature and culture. Students who demonstrated a good command of the Italian language in upper-level courses are eligible to receive a Certificate of Proficiency in Italian along with the awarding of the baccalaureate degree.  In conjunction with the Graduate School of Education, students can also apply to the highly-competitive Teacher Preparation Program during the second term of their junior year to work towards provisional certification.  Students of Italian can take advantage of several opportunities to enhance their academic experience:The Italian Club sponsors lectures and trips to the theater and opera, and other cultural programs. The Institute for Italian and Italian American Heritage organizes a broad range of events demonstrating the vibrant presence of Italian cultural traditions today as well as the creativity of the Italian diaspora in the United States and in the world. The Summer Program in Italy is a six-week program held in the lively Renaissance city of Urbino. The Study Abroad Program in Italy offers students a full-immersion experience with the opportunity to attend a semester or a year-long program in Florence.

For M.A. and Ph.D. Candidates

Our graduate students can enroll in either our Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.), Master of Arts (M.A.) or Doctoral program (Ph.D.). Our program covers all periods of Italian literature and, in conjunction with the World Languages Institute , emphasizes pedagogical training to help prepare graduate students for the classroom. Its strength is sustained by the variety of critical approaches and interdisciplinary perspectives represented by our faculty. Its standard of excellence is maintained by an active and committed graduate students body that organizes bi-annual conferences and publishes, with the assistance of the faculty, La Fusta , one of the first and most prominent graduate journals at Rutgers University and in the country. Our faculty also edits and publishes the internationally recognized journal Italian Quarterly. Our graduate students participate in the Transliteratures Project at Rutgers and can take advantage of both the Princeton-Rutgers Exchange and the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium (IUDC) by enrolling in graduate courses at other distinguished universities throughout the greater New York area after completing at least one year of full time study in the program.

For K-12 Teachers

In conjunction with Rutgers’ award-winning World Language Institute , our program offers the opportunity to be trained according to the latest developments in pedagogy and to complete a Masters of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) in three summers. We offer specially designed courses that focus on language, culture, and literature in Italian as well as on innovative methods of language instruction.
