The course focuses on the close-reading and discussion of short stories by prominent authors, such as Tarchetti, Serao, Verga, Messina, Negri, Pirandello, Buzzati, Calvino, Rodari, Sciascia, Ortese, and Scego. We will examine the structural, stylistic, and rhetorical features of these texts. We will also address key social and cultural issues of the 19th-21st centuries (such as the Italian Unification, the 'economic miracle', gender relationships, and migration) as well as literary movements and genres ('Verismo', the fantastic, and neo-realism). Our analysis will be supported by critical readings and a wide array of visual materials (clips from You Tube and movies by Vancini, Monicelli, and the Taviani brothers). Completion of questionnaires, digital presentations, and short papers required. Materials used in the class can be adapted for K-12 instruction. Conducted in Italian.

Analysis and practice of different registers of daily usage through a variety of oral and written activities including journal entries, business letters, magazine and newspaper articles, graffiti, love letters, and academic papers. The examination of various linguistic modes (from formal to colloquial, idiomatic, bureaucratic, and political) is accompanied by a discussion of the influence of Italian dialects on standard Italian. Review of crucial grammatical points focusing on the practical application of the communicative, direct approach which K-12 teachers of Italian may implement in their own classes. What does it mean to be Italian? This course analyzes the construction of Italian identity and its evolution through the study of a number of novels and films that grapple with its personal, geographical, political, and social features. The course will track and investigate the unfolding of this complex, layered and ever changing notion from the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861, to the struggles for self-preservation during World War II and the 1968 upheavals, to contemporary issues of cultural and ethnic reconfiguration related to the phenomenon of immigration. All materials used in class may be adapted for instruction at the K-12 level. Conducted in Italian.
