Welcome to the Italian Department at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. We are committed to the research and teaching of Italian language, literature, and culture from all periods—from Dante to opera, theater, and contemporary film. With six full-time faculty members, our department is home to award-winning researchers, a thriving graduate program (MA, MAT, PhD) and an incredibly rich undergraduate program, where students choose from a range of courses on Italian literature and food culture; world-class cities like Venice, Naples, and Rome; Italian for Business for careers in wine, food, and fashion; the history of Italian opera; the mafia movie genre in the United States and Italy; Italian women writers; medieval and modern Italian poetry; and race, migration, and Italian (post)colonialism, among others.
